As we age, we often reflect on our lifestyle, our physical and mental health, and our overall well-being. Generally, individuals prioritize their physical health by setting aside time for yearly check-ups and meeting with their doctors or specialists when concerns arise. It is important not to forget that our mental health is just as important as our physical health. Individuals must also make maintaining positive mental health a priority. After all, if you’re in a better headspace, you’re less likely to crave all that comfort food, and you are more likely to live a healthier, active lifestyle.

Positive mental health maintenance is important for everyone. Positive mental health allows individuals to realize their full potential, cope with the stressors of everyday life, work productively, and give back to their communities. Attending to your mental health isn’t easy but it is very necessary because it impacts the way you feel, think and act.

Here are 8 ways that you help maintain positive mental health:

1. Hydrate. Drink lots of fluids throughout your day. Purchase a reusable water bottle and keep filling it up all day. Try to also make healthier choices when eating, like eating vegetables with every meal.

2. Sleep. It is very important that humans get at least seven or eight hours of sleep a night. Sleeping has many positive benefits.

3. Be kind. It doesn’t hurt to say nice things to people you like. It is important to care about relationships and for the people around you who love and support you. Surround yourself with positive people.

4. Find purpose. Find what truly makes you happy and do it every single day. One’s purpose and happiness should be priority.

5. Manage your time. Make lists and then start checking things off. It is important to develop routines where possible.

6. Take time off. Stop what you’re doing. Make time for yourself. Do something that makes you happy.

7. Meditate or practice yoga. Meditation for 5 minutes everyday can make a difference. Yoga is also a very good way to relax, be mindful and take care of your mental and physical health.

8. Seek help. If you’ve done 1 through 7 (or even if you haven’t) and you don’t find yourself feeling better, you might need assistance. That’s totally normal. Nobody is perfect and we can all benefit from help.

There are several ways to seek mental health help and and no one size fits all. Talk therapy works for many people, for others anti-depressant medications are the answer, and for others still, nothing seems to make a difference. Those with little hope and who are anti-depressant resistant have found encouraging success with ketamine infusions—a treatment aimed at persistent depression that does not respond to traditional therapies. Maybe look into ketamine infusions? See if it could help you like it has helped so many others. As we grow older it is important to take care of ourselves and get the most out of life. We should all make sure that we are simply trying to feel better and that we maintain a positive mental, physical well-being.
