Record heatwaves across the US and all over the planet have been a big topic in the headlines this year.  Last summer was officially considered the hottest on record, and so far, this summer looks to be even hotter!  We wanted our “One Good Thing” post this month to offer suggestions toward keeping you cool during the summer heat.

Umbrellas – Not Just for Staying Dry

You know that umbrella you keep tucked away in a closet for one of those rare (in most of Colorado anyway) rainy days?  Get it out to make your own shade if you must be out and about in the sun.  While we think of umbrellas as something to use to keep us dry, some studies have shown that a typical umbrella can offer around 70% protection from UV rays.  Specialty “sun umbrellas” can protect even more, up to 99%.

Cumulative Effects

As with so many things, being successful in keeping your cool this summer may involve a combination of many small practices that add up to staying as cool as you can under the circumstances.  Many of these are simple, common sense things, and we’ll list a few just in case there’s something here you haven’t thought about.

  • Stay well hydrated and consume cooling foods and beverages, including electrolytes
  • Limit going out during the hottest parts of the day
  • Wear light colors that cover your skin
  • Take cool showers or baths
  • Put effort into keeping your home as cool as possible (we liked the concise list of tips listed in this post)
Finally, we thought it would be helpful to share this link about “Recognizing, Preventing and Treating Heat-Related Illness.” It’s an educational, interactive course that explores different types of heat-related illnesses (HRI). It also covers how to recognize, treat, and prevent HRI.

If all else fails keeping a sense of humor may help – so we’ll close with this:
