Warm weather brings sunshine and outdoor fun, but it also means an increase in pesky bug bites. Whether you’re dealing with mosquitoes, fleas, or ants, we wanted to share some options that we’ve found to be effective in handling those uncomfortable bites.

Prevention

Bug bites are not just annoying and itchy.  They are also a source of disease transmission.  We encourage you to avoid getting bitten, want to share this article, Natural Tick Repellent: What Works (healthline.com), because it offers a variety of effective preventative measures.

Home Remedy: Baking Soda

For treating bites, we suggest making a baking soda poultice (2-3 tablespoons of baking soda mixed with just enough cold water to make a paste) and applying it to the affected area.  It really helps take the sting out.  You probably already have what you need to make it in your pantry.

Simple First Aid Reminders

  1. Clean the Area: As soon as you notice a bite, clean the area with soap and water. This helps prevent infection.  It also reduces the risk of scratching, which can make the irritation worse.
  2. Apply a Cold Compress: Use a cold compress or an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to reduce swelling.  This numbs the itch. Apply it for about 10 minutes at a time.
  3. Avoid Scratching: Scratching can worsen the bite and lead to infection. Keep your nails short.  Consider using a soothing lotion to distract from the itch.
  4. Seek Medical Attention if Needed: If you experience severe reactions such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or lips, or if the bite shows signs of infection (increased redness, warmth, or pus), seek medical help immediately.

By following these steps, you can manage summertime bug bites and enjoy the season with fewer disruptions.
