This month, we’d like to invite you to focus on your immune system and share some information to help you do just that.  Your immune system is your body’s natural defense against harmful invaders.  It ensures that you stay healthy, whether supporting you while battling an infection or simply working in the background as you go about your day-to-day business.   Why not befriend it and help strengthen your body’s natural defenses?

Why Befriending Your Immune System Matters

The concept of “befriending” your immune system might seem a little unusual, but it’s a powerful metaphor for building a cooperative relationship with your body’s natural defenses. In essence, instead of fighting against or overloading it, you want to work in harmony with it—giving it the tools and resources it needs to do its best work.

When you nurture it, you empower it to respond efficiently to the stresses and challenges that come its way. This holistic approach can lead to fewer illnesses, quicker recovery times, and a generally stronger body.

Take it Outside – Your Immune System Will Thank You

Believe it or not, positive relationships and a supportive social network can play a role in how well your immune system functions. Studies have shown that social isolation and loneliness can increase inflammation and reduce the body’s ability to fight off infections.

Another helpful practice is to get outside and experience the effects nature.  There is an abundance of research that shows the benefits, and we wanted to share this Systematic Review on Nature Exposure and Its Effects on Immune System Functioning for those who are interested in how and why time in nature is such a potent boost to your immunity.

The One Good Thing twist we’re adding this month is to invite you to combine the two and take your socializing outdoors whenever you possibly can.  Take time to connect with loved ones and come up with creative ways to do this outdoors.  Maybe it’s bundling up and taking a walk outdoors.  Maybe it’s finding a café or restaurant that features outdoor seating under a heater to keep you warm.

Time with friends, especially when you include exercise and being outdoors, can boost your immune system immensely.  It’s also a great way to help you manage stress effectively.  Chronic stress is one of the most detrimental things you can do to your body. When you’re stressed, your body produces more cortisol, a hormone that can suppress the immune response and increase susceptibility to illness.  Keep in mind that a supportive social life isn’t just good for your mental health—it also benefits your immune system.

Infection Control Practices – Play It Safe

A final reminder: it wasn’t that long ago when the whole world was caught up in the Covid-19 pandemic.  We learned firsthand about basic infection control practices.

  • Stay home if you’re sick.
  • Wash your hands.
  • Wear a mask if you are around people outside your immediate circle.
  • Maintain your distance.
  • Avoid large, indoor gatherings.

If you or someone in your care is immunocompromised, these simple practices are STILL the MOST effective safeguards against not only COVID-19, but also flu, common cold and respiratory viruses of all types.

Conclusion: Empowering Your Immune System

Your immune system is not just a passive, reactive force—it’s an active, adaptable, and powerful partner that can keep you healthy and strong when treated well. By adopting practices that support immune function, such as eating well, staying active, managing stress, and getting enough sleep, you’re not just helping your body fight off illnesses—you’re empowering it to thrive.

In the end, befriending your immune system is about recognizing its vital role in your overall health and nurturing it with the care and attention it deserves. After all, it isn’t just a defense—it’s a foundation for a healthier, happier life.
