What is Neuroplasticity?

What is Neuroplasticity?

Simply put, neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to change its structure and rewire its connections, making them stronger or weaker, depending on what’s happening at any given moment.  It is influenced by age, genetics, nutrition, and our environment.  Most of us were taught that the human brain stops making new cells and that new connections between cells are nearly impossible to create after a certain (young) age.  Current evidence indicates that certain areas of the adult brain do generate new cells.

Calm Your Mind

Calm Your Mind

According to a recent study published in Nature, 42% of Americans (sample size 2,036) reported experiencing more anxiety than they did before the pandemic.

Not tending to chronic stress can lead to digestive issues and headaches and is linked to a higher risk of anxiety, depression and heart disease.  If your coping mechanisms aren’t cutting it and you’re looking for practical new ways to ease your unease, consider de-stressing by calming your mind.  Simple meditative techniques can be practiced anywhere at anytime.

What Are Circadian Rhythms?

What Are Circadian Rhythms?

A circadian rhythm or circadian cycle, is a natural, internal process that regulates the physical, mental, and behavioral sleep–wake cycle and repeats roughly every 24 hours. These natural processes respond primarily to light and dark and affect most living things, including animals, plants, and microbes.

What is NAD+?

What is NAD+?

Since its discovery in 1906, research continues to show that NAD+ is critical for maintaining the health of our cells, producing energy, and protecting our DNA. It is involved in nearly every metabolic process in our bodies, and newer evidence indicates that it is important in cell-to-cell signaling and functions as a neurotransmitter in our autonomic nervous system (the part that controls things like blood pressure, goosebumps, and some of the “flight-or-fight” response).

Vitamin D

Vitamin D

This is the first of an ongoing series of blog posts, answering questions we get about different supplements…..we start with Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is not actually a vitamin at all. Because it can be synthesized by most mammals in sufficient amounts, it is really considered a hormone!  Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble compounds that can be made from cholesterol in the skin through a chemical reaction that depends on sun exposure.

Immune System Health – Back to the Basics

Immune System Health – Back to the Basics

Suggestions for getting back to the basics for immune system health and wellness.  Your body, mind and spirit will thank you for creating a healthful environment any time of year, but with the holidays approaching and as we get deeper into winter, it’s more important than ever to improve the function of your immune system.

The New York Times is Writing About Ketamine

The New York Times is Writing About Ketamine

We were quite excited about an article published in the New York Times recently.  The title of the November 5 article was “The Ketamine Cure.”   Our integrative healthcare clinic has been safely working with ketamine since March 2020 and Dr. Stoner, our founding physician, has been working with it for over 20 years as an anesthesiologist.  We were intrigued to see ketamine as a subject outside of medical journals and read the article with great interest.

Recognizing Seasonal Affective Disorder

Recognizing Seasonal Affective Disorder

Fall in the Colorado mountains. What a wonderful time of year. The Aspen trees are changing into the beautiful, brilliant gold that most people only get to experience in pictures and screen savers…For some this is a welcome change, signaling the transition from summer to winter. However, for others it can be a very difficult time of year.

Try Napping – A Quick and Easy Way to Recharge, Relax and De-Stress

Try Napping – A Quick and Easy Way to Recharge, Relax and De-Stress

Have you heard of a “coffee nap” or “nappuccino”? It’s a trend in napping where one drinks a cup of coffee or other caffeinated beverage and then immediately take a nap. The caffeine doesn’t kick in for about 30 minutes, allowing the perfect amount of time for a brief nap before it does. Proponents enjoy both the restorative effects of a powernap AND an alertness boost from the caffeine upon waking.

Staying Safe and Supporting Your Immune System in the New Era of Covid

Staying Safe and Supporting Your Immune System in the New Era of Covid

Covid-19 has been on our radar for about a year and a half now, and some new terms have entered the conversation. “Variants”, “long-haul”, “long-covid”, and “jabs” have all been added to our vocabularies. With a new surge of infections spreading across the country, we thought it was time to have another conversation about how to prevent and manage Covid-19 infections
